H.E. Mr Jon Ramberg, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of NorwayHowever, the Norwegian scientist and explorer Thor Heyerdahl put forward the theory that the Norwegians have their roots in Azerbaijan. This theory can be and has been disputed, but it has had the positive effect of drawing attention to Norwegian-Azerbaijani relations. Everybody in Azerbaijan knows Thor Heyerdahl and his theory. Far fewer would know that Azerbaijan has a place in Norwegian literature. In 1831 the poet Henrik Wergeland wrote about the oil-springs of Baku, which he sees as "the fire of freedom, bursting out of millions of hearts". And in 1899 the Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun travelled to Azerbaijan and Georgia. In his book "In Wonderland" Hamsun gives a fascinating account of his journey. His closing words are: "I will always long to come back here. For I have drunk from the waters of the river Kura". For the very close and manifold relations between Norway and Azerbaijan today see
